New Mexico has over 200 drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers and programs.  The drastic amount of rehab facilities come from the wide variety of addictions plaguing the state of New Mexico.  Why is this occurring?  It is mainly due to the border approximation of the United States and that of Mexico.  Drugs are being transferred over and are staying within the parameters of New Mexico.  Such drugs include cocaine, heroin, GHB, LSD, PCP and MDMA.  Another problem that New Mexico has is that many of these drug abusers refuse to admit that they have a problem regardless of the multiple interventions that may have taken place in the past or life altering situations that they may have experienced.  Those who do not realize this often end their lives prematurely or live with life long illnesses.  However, there is a positive side for those who do admit that substance abuse is a disease and that professional help must be sought.
For this reason, the process for recovery is long and difficult.  The programs that most institutions recommend are in care facility treatments for a long term stay.  However, there are various other programs which cater to short term residency patients and out patient programs.  Treatments in the South West are starting to use a variety of alternative medicine in order to treat patients.  Some of these alternative methods include acupuncture as a way to detox the body.
Once the substance abuser has been admitted and made a patient of the treatment facility, the patient will go through an ardent withdrawal process.  The detox of the substance from the substance abuser’s body creates symptoms of withdrawal from the drug.  This is a painful process to watch a loved one endure because it creates bouts of depression but it is absolutely necessary to overcome the addiction and to recover from it.  This process also can take anywhere from days to months and in many cases years but to a lesser extent.  Normal side affects include nausea and vomiting along with multiple body aches including the head and back.  During this withdrawal period, the patient will begin to realize how much his or her substance abuse problem was impeding the way he or she lived life.  This will be the first breakthrough in overcoming the dependency of the drug.
Many fall into relapse because they continue to make the same errors from before coming to rehab such as maintaining harmful relationships and going out to the same bars and clubs which provide these substances and are meant to be major temptations.  Most feel that substance abuse is not a disease and that only one drink or one hit of a drug will not be detrimental to the recovery process but this is a grand error.  Substance abuse is a disease and must be treated as one.
